musicFreya Skye “Stardust” Review

We know her from the Eurovision stage and Disney productions, but only now is Freya Skye showing her true face. Her debut EP “Stardust,” released by Hollywood Records, is an intimate record of navigating the various stages of a relationship, proving that she is one of the most interesting voices in contemporary pop.

From Disney to mature pop

The world met Freya Skye in 2022 when she represented the United Kingdom with great energy at the Junior Eurovision. Fans of Disney productions will likely recognize her from her role as Nova in the film Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires. However, on February 4, her debut EP “Stardust” was released, featuring five songs of honest and emotional pop that come together to create a cohesive whole, practically making it feel like listening to the artist’s diary.

Stardust Track-by-track

The opening EP track “silent treatment” is the artist’s biggest hit to date, with over 20 million plays on Spotify. This is pop at its best: dynamic, with a powerful radio chorus that would be perfect for shouting out during a nighttime drive. However, beneath the dance beat lies a story of a broken heart, confusion, and emotional manipulation.

“Petty” brings a completely different energy. It is the most energetic song on this EP. It is imbued with modern pop in a stronger production, which certainly makes it stand out from the other songs. Lyrically, it tells the story of a relationship breakdown with someone who was dishonest towards us. Despite the serious topic, the song itself has a witty and funny character, which makes this song one of the strongest points of the release.

“Golden boy” tells the story of how we idealize relationships, only to later realize that the person didn’t deserve us and the time we gave them. Freya has excellent control over her voice, perfectly conveying the emotions of this piece, which only proves her extraordinary vocal maturity.

Then Freya slows down, allowing her vocal skills to shine through.

“Maybe tomorrow” is a beautiful, intimate song that just grabs your heart. This is a story about a destructive relationship with the hope of a better tomorrow that never comes.

Last but not least, my personal favorite: “why’d you have to call”. It’s a well-composed song with building tension and a catchy chorus. The song is about the return of “ghosts from the past” when we finally start to regain peace. I think this song is the perfect conclusion to the entire EP, because it shows that the process of healing a broken heart is not easy; sometimes we have to take a step back in order to finally move forward.

“Stardust” is a debut that Freya’ s industry colleagues could envy. The artist not only has a great control over her beautiful voice, but most of all, she can write lyrics that anyone who has ever experienced a broken heart can identify with. If this is the beginning of her journey, then Freya Skye has everything she needs to become the new voice of her generation. I will definitely keep my fingers crossed for her.
