musicConan Gray “Wishbone” review

Going through a breakup? Wishbone. Lost a friend? Wishbone. You love someone who does not feel the same? Wishbone. You’re just in the mood to have a good cry? Wishbone.

Conan Gray’s album “Wishbone” is raw and gut wrenching, full of unexpected turns and twists in the melody as the songs progress. What starts slow and mellow turns loud and angry, playing into the unpredictable nature of every song.

Gray’s vocal range is magical, which is exactly why this album hits so close to home. There are tons of “Kid Crow” (2020) with the sassy and fun image Gray created when looking at love, despite dinging about heartache. But the honesty and pure emotions stem from “Superache” (2022).

The album has a powerful opening with the song “Actor” in which Gray expresses feelings of unrequited love, the yearning for someone who does not reciprocate those feelings – which is something he explores in his music often.

While Olivia Roderigo, Gray’s best friend, was not listed as a co-writer on this album, Rodrigo’s influence in his music become more evident, with the angsty tone of “Guts” being present in “Wishbone.” While not being directly involved, her friendship and insight played a significant part in shaping the album. At the end of the day, it’s the people you surround yourself with, right?
